Juma Tutu Factfile

Born in a family of six in Majengo, Mombasa in 1979.

Schools attended: Makande Primary School 1988-1994 and Tudor High School 1995-1998

His father Abdallah Hatibu used to play the lead guitar with the legendary Simba wa Nyika at Saba Saba Club in Mombasa. Mother Chrisine Mungala used to sing in the church choir. His illustrious younger sister, Nyota Ndogo has carved out a niche for herself in the Kenya music scene. Another sister Lela is now getting a lot of airplay at the Coast with her hit single Nikimuona Yeye produced at Studio Jikoni in Ganjoni in 2004

LIVE PERFORMANCES
Generations Band (1999-2000) Bango Sounds (2000-2001) Uyoga(2001-2003)
Finalist: Spotlight on Kenyan Music 2005
The Tutu Band 2003 to date.

INSPIRATION
Manu I)ibango, Hugh Masekela, Yosson N'dour and Miriam Makeba. He credits the late Fela Kuti and Mzee Joseph Ngala as those who have greatly influenced him on the sax. Internationally he has a healthy respect for John Coltrene and Joshua Redman and he is awed by their tenor sax music arrangement.

TIT BITS
Did you know that KBC has been using Juma Tutu's song Nakupenda Kama Sukari as a signature tune for the program 'Kivunja Mbavu' without permission? That they also used the song "Kimombasa" with impunity as a signature tune to advertise for the last Coast Nite held at the Carnivore?

FUTURE PLANS

Plans to release a new album Kigeugeu that will feature his kid sister Nyota Ndogo. He has over 30 new songs which he intends to start releasing by next months (March) Juma Tutu calls his genre of music Swahili Jazz, because he sings in Kiswahili but his music is larger than Bango. He feels that he may need to sing in English in order to reach a wider audience but his music will still retain its distinctive coastal flavor. By and large he wants to further infuse his music with the Mijikenda; Maboumboum, Nzumari and the Marimba.

TUTU'S VIEWS ON THE MUSIC SCENE
`Times are changing for the better, musicians now drive their own cars, have their own houses and so on. The music business is starting to boom for the better, at least I get some royalties from MCSK for my work'
